Acne is not at all a dangerous skin problem. However, it can cause a great impact on your personal and social life if it worsens and leaves behind some scars.
An acne breakout can easily lead to low self-esteem, and as a result, it can change how you look at yourself and approach others.
It is important, therefore, to do your research about acne to know what causes this skin problem as well as get an idea about the treatment and symptoms related to this condition.
Terms related to acne
There are actually a lot of terms you might encounter when doing a research about acne. Here's the short list:
Acne
Acne is defined as the inflammation of the skin because of the overproduction of oil glands at the base of hair follicles. Acne can be mild or severe.
Acne conglobata
This is a severe form of acne, wherein the nodules are connected with other acne lesions beneath the outer layer of the skin.
Acne vulgaris
This is a medical term that refers to common acne. The symptoms include the appearance of whiteheads, blackheads, papules, and pustules.
Blackheads
These are bumps, which are yellowish or blackish in color. They are embedded into the skin's pores and are commonly seen as one of the first signs of acne. These lesions are often filled with dead skin cells and excess oil.
Comedo
This refers to acne lesions, which can be open or close.
Hair follicle
It is a sac where hair growth begins. This is where sebaceous glands open and excrete sebum or oil to the skin surface.
Inflammatory
In the case of acne, this describes the lesions that result from clogged follicles composed of dead skin cells, bacteria, and excess oil. Inflammation can also be triggered by chemical reactions.
Papules
These are small bumps on skin that are round and solid and often reddish in color.
Pimples
Also known as small pustules or papules, pimples result from bacteria infections, which lead to skin inflammation and presence of pus.
Pustule
This inflammatory lesion looks like a whitehead, but is accompanied by redness around it.
Sebaceous gland
This is the gland that is responsible for the production of sebum or oil, which can cause acne.
Sebum
The sebum is the oil that is trapped on the skin pore and may cause the skin inflammation.
Whiteheads
These are small bumps on skin that appear on the surface with white color. It results from clogged pores that trap sebum bacteria and dead skin cells.
